Frequently Asked Questions
What services do you offer?
The practice currently offers virtual individual, couples, family, and group psychotherapy in New York. Clients must be physically located in New York during sessions regardless of home address, unless otherwise discussed with their therapist.
How can therapy help me? What should I expect? What do you expect from me?
With therapy you are dedicating time every week to building your mental health. You should expect to put in effort into building insight and learning new coping skills. Starting therapy means allowing vulnerability with a new person. Our team understands that. You and your therapist will be able to take your time getting to know one another so you can begin to feel more comfortable sharing things about your life. Sometimes therapy will require you to face some discomfort and difficult emotions. Just know that the pace of therapy is always set by you. You should always expect to feel safe, guided, and respected in therapy. What our therapists expect from clients is for them to show up to each session with a sense of curiosity and openness to learn.
How do I know if you are the right therapist for me?
In starting, you may request to do a phone consult with your therapist to get to know one another. This is the first point of contact in seeing if your personalities and working styles compliment one another to build a professional therapeutic relationship. As you go through the intake process (first month or so of therapy), it is important you check in with how you feel. Do you feel comfortable? Do you feel like the therapist’s approach matches your goals? If something doesn’t feel right, it is safe and the right thing to do to discuss it with your therapist. They will not be offended and would like to help you find a better match. If it does feel right, then you may continue your work together. It is a priority of our team to help you find the right care.
How can your experience help me?
Our team is trained on the graduate level and licensed in New York State to provide a high quality of care to our clients. Therapists have training in various therapeutic modalities including but not limited to Psychodynamic Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Exposure and Response Therapy (ERP), Somatic Informed Therapy, and Trauma Informed Therapy.
How will I know if therapy is working?
Therapy takes time, but the length of time really depends on what you want to work on. Some clients do therapy for a few months to a year to learn some new skills or work on one particular goal. Some clients stay in therapy for many years, because they enjoy having the space in their week to process their feelings with an unbiased person. You will know if therapy is working if you feel like you are in a safe space to talk and are learning something new. There are some things we can and cannot control in life. We will focus on what you can control and help you take action to see change in your life. We will also focus on how you react to what you cannot control and process your emotions around this. This is why therapy has to be collaborative, because it will require you to put these things into practice and see your therapy work working.
How do you make therapy accessible?
All sessions are held virtually through a HIPAA compliant video platform.
How do I get started?
You can schedule a phone consultation directly with a therapist via our Team page or book a therapy session via zocdoc. Therapeutic fit is so important, so we always encourage an ongoing open dialogue about what you are looking for in your therapy.
What is your Attendance & Cancellation policy? What is the benefit of going to therapy once a week?
Clients benefit the most from therapy when committing to weekly sessions. This enables you to build a strong working relationship with your new therapist and identify goals. The cadence of sessions may increase or decrease as time goes on based on need.
Taking the step to start therapy means committing to doing the work to feel better. This requires consistency. The more you put into therapy the more you will get out of it.
When needing to cancel a session, clients must give at least 48 hours notice or they will be charged the full session fee. This fee is not reimbursed by insurance companies.
Rates
What is the rate for a therapy session?
Below are our session rates. However, we also offer rates on an income based sliding scale to help make therapy affordable to those who cannot afford the full session rate. Clients can email us to request a sliding scale rate. We are happy to discuss options with you to make therapy accessible if you are concerned about affordability.
Individual sessions are $250 with our lead therapist (Kristen). Sliding scale is $215-$250. Kristen accepts Cigna health insurance.
Individual sessions are $200 with an associate therapist (Emily, Nadeen, & Rachel). Sliding scale is $125-$200. Our associates are not in-network with health insurance.
Couples and Family sessions are $250 with an associate therapist. Sliding scale is $175-$250.
Group therapy rates are set based on the type of group.
Do you accept insurance? How much would I pay for sessions if I use my out-of-network benefits?
The practice is out-of-network with insurance with the exception that Kristen individually accepts Cigna health insurance. Our associate therapists are out-of-network with insurance. For private pay- clients are responsible for full payment after each session.
Did you know that if your insurance plan offers out-of-network benefits, you may be eligible for partial reimbursement? Typically insurance companies that offer these benefits will reimburse you for 60-80% of costs. Depending on your benefits this could compare similarly to in-network costs.
You can check out the Benefits Calculator below for a personalized estimate of what your costs would be with using your out-of-network benefits. Please note- do not use this calculator for information on Kristen and Cigna as this only works for out-of-network quotes. Kristen is in-network with Cigna.
How do I actually use out-of-network benefits? Is it easy?
Using out-of-network benefits doesn’t need to be hard or time consuming. We have partnered with Mentaya, a platform that will submit claims for you when using out-of-network benefits. They deal with your insurance company to help you receive reimbursement so you don’t have to. This service would be provided to you for free through the practice and is completely optional.
With this option of using your out-of-network benefits, you would pay the full session fee, the practice would submit your claim to Mentaya, Mentaya would submit the claim to your insurance, and your insurance would reimburse you.
If there are any issues with the claim, Mentaya would address them for you.
If you prefer to submit claims directly to your insurance company instead we are happy to provide you with Superbill receipts for you to submit to insurance. When using this option we recommend you contact your insurance company in advance to learn about their process for submissions and confirm your coverage.
