Anxiety Therapy
Have You Been Struggling With Excessive Worry Or Stress?
Do you find yourself analyzing or overthinking everything you think, say, or do? Are you often overwhelmed by catastrophic thoughts and fears? Have you experienced any other persistent difficult feelings, such as:
Panic or hypervigilance?
Exhaustion, lethargy, or fatigue?
Intense fears of failure or abandonment?
Low self-worth or self-esteem?
Maybe you avoid conflict and confrontation at all costs, making it hard to navigate relationships and stand up for yourself. Or perhaps you notice yourself entirely avoiding specific people, places, and things that trigger your anxiety, which only makes the anxiety worse, preventing you from living your life the way you want to and pursuing what matters most.
Stress or Worry Can Lead To Worse Impacts When Not Addressed
Perhaps your symptoms also regularly affect your ability to function well at work or at home. Maybe you have trouble eating regularly, sleeping well, or fulfilling your responsibilities within your job or your family—which has then further contributed to your stress levels.
You may have experienced some unpleasant physical symptoms as well, such as headaches, stomach pains, digestive issues, or full-blown panic attacks. You may even be anxious or scared about your anxiety itself, creating a vicious cycle of fear, worry, and more anxiety.
Thankfully, though, most forms of anxiety disorder do respond very well to therapy and other treatments. At NY City Psychotherapy, we can help you manage your anxiety and learn to trust yourself and your ability to cope. And with our help and support, you can build a lasting sense of peace and safety within yourself moving forward.
Everyone Experiences Stress Or Anxiety At Some Point
Despite being highly treatable, anxiety remains among the most common mental health issues, affecting millions of people worldwide every day. Because feelings of stress and anxiousness are normal psychological responses to certain situations, it can be often difficult to differentiate between healthy and unhealthy forms of anxiety.
However, when anxiety becomes chronic and debilitating, it can negatively impact almost every aspect of a person’s life—which is the daily reality for far too many people. According to the CDC, for example, around one in eight Americans over 18 report “regular feelings of worry, nervousness, and anxiety” (1).
People Are Often Hesitant To Seek Out Treatment For Anxiety
Society plays its role in contributing to widespread feelings of stress and anxiety as well—while often also discouraging treatment for these very issues. In addition to larger stressors, such as the pandemic, global conflict, and climate change, many face a shortage of support in seeking treatment from their families or communities.
Therapy for anxiety can fill that gap in support by providing the care that you deserve. At NYCP, we get it—and we are here to help. By working with one of our experienced therapists, you can begin the important work of facing and overcoming your anxiety.
Anxiety Therapy Can Help You Reclaim Your Life
When stress and panic have overtaken your life, it can quickly feel like anxiety is your new baseline. Between anxiety about having anxiety and situations directly triggering it you may be feeling completely paralyzed and stuck in a hopeless cycle of worry. With the insight of an engaged anxiety therapist, however, you can break free from this cycle and reclaim your sense of independence so you can finally feel free.
Our NYCP therapists are understanding, empathetic, and well-experienced in treating the many difficulties presented by anxiety. We can help you find short-term relief while building toward long-term healing so that you can take control of your life once and for all.
What To Expect From Anxiety Therapy Sessions
Before you begin your online sessions, we will offer you a free 15-minute phone consultation so you can assess the right therapist fit for you. The therapeutic relationship is a unique one, and we truly believe in the value of working with the right therapist. This call will also give your therapist a better understanding of your history, your symptoms, and your larger goals for anxiety therapy. From there we will develop a custom treatment plan specific to your unique needs.
During your actual therapy sessions, we will explore the underlying causes of your anxiety, teach you tangible skills to manage your symptoms effectively, and build your confidence in your ability to move through moments of high anxiety, ultimately reducing your fear of experiencing it in the first place. When you have that confidence you will be able to show up more fully in your own life and start doing the things you love once again.
Treatment Methods That Will Get Results
At NYCP, we combine cognitive and somatic treatment methods to help our clients cope with the negative thoughts and distressing physical symptoms relating to their anxiety. Your anxiety therapist will utilize an approach incorporating of modalities, including:
Psychodynamic Therapy (PDT) – PDT uses psychoanalysis to explore the underlying thoughts and beliefs that cause your anxiety.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – CBT works to identify and address how your thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors reinforce and perpetuate your anxiety.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) – DBT teaches emotional regulation and distress tolerance skills to help you move through your anxiety.
Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy (ERP) – ERP works to reduce the negative responses triggered by your anxiety through structured exposure exercises.
Somatic Therapy (SE) – Somatic-focused therapy uses mind-body treatment techniques to soothe the physical manifestations of your anxiety.
In the short term, we will teach you how to combine these cognitive and somatic elements so that you can use them simultaneously. This will allow you to more effectively self-regulate in moments of high anxiety or distress by targeting your symptoms from every angle.
Our long-term work together will explore how your life experiences and relationships have shaped your emotional experience of the world. We will strive to understand what scares you the most and why. We will work to build and reinforce more positive belief systems so that you can live a more authentic life and strengthen your relationship with yourself.
You May Still Have Some Questions About Anxiety Therapy…
I’ve tried therapy before and I still have anxiety. What will be different this time around?
There are so many factors that can impact the effectiveness of therapy. The right fit is essential both in terms of therapist and style of therapy. Our approach to anxiety focuses on redefining your relationship to it. This means breaking through the fear of having anxiety itself so you can feel more confident in your ability to handle it when it does arise.
Certain strategies (like meditation exercises or thought worksheets) don’t resonate with me.
You are a unique individual and therefore your therapy should be personally tailored to you. Your anxiety therapist will listen to what has and has not worked well for you in the past and then collaborate with you on a plan for which skills might prove the most beneficial for you to learn and practice.
Committing to weekly therapy feels overwhelming. Do I really have to come every week?
Although therapy can be hard work at times, it’s ultimately an investment in your long-term mental well-being. The best way to see the benefits of therapy is to fully commit yourself to showing up each week with an openness toward learning and exploring. With the right therapist, you will have the support to help you do this difficult yet important work. And with therapy, consistency will help you see the most return on this investment in yourself.
